Reception

Our Reception class provides a warm and nurturing transition from Preschool to more structured learning that happens in Primary School. As in Preschool, Reception follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) 7 Areas of Learning.

Our aim in our Reception class is to create an environment where playful learning meets nature, ensuring a safe space where young minds blossom through exploration, collaboration, and meaningful connection.

We focus on playful exploration through hands-on learning where the child’s individual interests and curiosities are nurtured.  Wherever possible we take our learning outdoors to spark imagination, connect with nature and make learning come alive.

Peer learning is a concept embraced school-wide and for Reception this means the children spend time playing, learning and socialising with children in preschool, as well as the older primary children, creating opportunities for gaining confidence, enhancing communication and fostering enriching connections.

A day in the life of a Reception child might look like:

Morning greeting indoors or outdoors (play and creativity)

Circle time & phonics or numeracy activities

Snack-time

Outdoor play & exploration with Preschool/Library/Farm visit

Hot lunch

Outdoor play with Primary School

Music/Free play/Yoga/Story-time/Creativity

Dismissal outdoors

Primary

While our Primary students are often learning the same topics as their state-school peers, education is delivered through more targeted lessons that meet the child exactly where they are.

Peer learning is an essential part of everyday lessons at London Scandinavian School and really helps the children to develop their communication skills, encouraging collaborative problem-solving, as well as building confidence and fostering strong relationships as a school community.

Throughout the primary school we use Maths No Problem!, a Singaporean maths mastery programme that explores different ways to solve mathematical problems through the use of concrete materials, pictorial representations and finally abstract symbolic notation to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills and equips the children with the tools they need to solve any maths problem.  The practical nature of the programme really lends itself to our unique, Scandinavian approach to learning.

At London Scandinavian School all learning has to be engaging and spark that curiosity to know more.  In English lessons, there is an emphasis on real-world communication through role-playing, discussions, and presentations. Students are given opportunities to make choices about their learning, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility.

Whilst Maths and English are taught as standalone lessons, all other subjects are explored through a termly learning question that teachers and students are invited to both ask and answer, challenging them to interact with the subject matter in a more meaningful way.

“How does colour influence my world?”

Learning is presented as a rewarding and enjoyable experience, rather than solely driven by grades or external pressure. Activities are designed to be fun and interactive, keeping students motivated and engaged in the learning process.

As in Preschool, Reception and Primary students do as much learning outdoors as possible as well as regular school trips, providing context to learning and exploring all that London has to offer.
